Reileen Kawahara Gena Altered Carbon 00

Reileen as Gena

Reileen Kawahara (Dichen Lachman) is the main villainess from the TV series Altered Carbon. She also appears in the 2020 anime movie Altered Carbon: Resleeved (voiced by Elizabeth Maxwell).

She is the sister of the show's protagonist Takeshi Kovacs. The two young siblings grew up in an abusive household with a violent father. Their mother was killed by their father, and when he started turning his attention to Reileen, Takeshi killed him. As they no longer had any parents they were taken into custody. Takeshi agreed to join the Protectorate's Colonial Tactical Assault Corps (CTAC) if Reileen was given a good home. Unbeknownst to him though, Reileen was sold to the Yakuza.

Ten years later the two siblings are reunited when Takeshi's CTAC raid the Yakuza. Takeshi is shocked to find that his sister is now a Yakuza henchwoman. The unexpected reunion causes the siblings to team up to protect each other, and they both turn on their masters and flee together.

They return to their home planet Harlan's World, and end up falling in with the rebellion leader Quellcrist Falconer. She is a woman who wants to eliminate the system she created which has allowed for rich people to be near immortals, and wants life to return to how it used to be where once someone dies, they are dead for good. As they spend more time with Quellcrist, Takeshi fully gets behind her cause, but Reileen feels differently. She began to get jealous of Quell getting closer to her brother and ultimately betrayed the rebels by selling them out to the Protectorate. Rei turned on Quell herself during the rebel escape from the Protectorate by destroying their shuttle with an orbital laser strike. Though presumed dead, Rei had actually managed to survive the explosion. She became very rich from selling out the rebels to the Protectorate and thus was able to experience near immortality through resleeving into new bodies thanks to her wealth.

Hundreds of years later she is now an extremely powerful crime boss with the police captain under her control. She owns the Wei Clinic, a place used for torture (where Miriam Bancroft sent Lizzie), as well as Head In The Clouds, an extremely depraved brothel for the rich. She hires prostitutes of all genders and ages (including children) to be used for her clients for any dark desire they may have, including torturer and murder. The prostitutes do this because they are under the impression that when they die they will be resleeved in a new body but in reality Reileen just lets them die without bringing them back.

Rei finds a way to bring her brother back after hundreds of years with the hope of reuniting. Takeshi eventually learns that his sister betrayed him and the rebels and that she has become a powerful monster. Rei reluctantly ends up blackmailing her brother to help her rectify problems with her criminal business, by threatening to harm some of the friends he has made if he doesn't comply.

Takeshi finds a way to eliminate Rei's way of living forever by destroying all of her clone sleeves, leaving her with just one life in one body. The siblings end up fighting on Rei's Head In The Clouds brothel with Takeshi eventually getting the upper hand. Rei promises Takeshi that she'll never stop which results in her brother shooting her to death. Takeshi cradles her corpse and cries as he sings a song he used to sing to her when they were children.

Altered Carbon: Resleeved[]

This anime movie takes place just one year after Reileen betrayed Quell and the rebellion. Rei appears as a sleeve called Gena, and she is now working for the Protectorate's Colonial Tactical Assault Corps, like her brother once did. Reileen isn't much of an antagonist in this movie, in fact she is the opposite. She even lies to her bosses when she is ordered to kill a girl called Holly, she says that she has done it, but lets Holly go instead. Despite having already betrayed the rebellion, she is still a long way off from the monster she will become in the far future.
