Rachel's Grandmother

Rachel's unnamed grandmother

Rachel's unnamed grandmother (Fran Lopate; 1918-1999) is a plot-twist villainess from the 1986 film, Deadtime Stories. She appeared in the film's middle segment, "Little Red Runninghood," and is the grandmother of the segment's main protagonist, Rachel.

The segment (a bedtime story that Uncle Mike was telling to his nephew, Little Brian) had Rachel picking up her grandmother's medication, doing so before she met her boyfriend. However, unbeknownst to Rachel, she picked up the wrong medication, and the proper batch ended up in the possession of a man named Willie, who had believed that he picked up the pills he had been taking in order to prevent his transformation into a werewolf. Rachel's grandmother is first shown being encountered by Willie, who asked to see Rachel, only for her grandmother to state that she wasn't home. She would later respond to Willie's persistent knocking with a threat to call the police on him.

Later in the segment, Willie returned to the house, and transformed into a werewolf under the full moon before appearing at the door of Rachel's grandmother. The werewolf barged into the house and attacked the grandmother, after which Rachel entered and saw that her grandmother had been attacked, but had survived. After Rachel kills Willie, the end of the segment has Rachel's grandmother being hospitalized, with Rachel seated at bedside and blaming herself for what happened. Rachel later noticed that her grandmother was slightly shaking, drawing concern from Rachel. Rachel's grandmother turned heel when she suddenly flashed a set of fangs and started growling, revealing that she was turning into a werewolf under the full moon. The segment ends with Rachel commenting on her grandmother's teeth (similar to the classic tale), and as revealed in Uncle Mike's closing narration, the evil grandmother mauled Rachel to death after her villainous transformation.
