Katie Stober (Brooke Lyons) is a hidden villainess from "The Head in the Abutment," episode 11.19 of Bones (airdate June 16, 2016). She was married to Jerry Stober, the owner of a local hockey team.
A year prior to the episode's events, Jerry passed away and left ownership of the team to Katie. When Booth and Brennan approached Katie regarding the murder of the team's star player, Seth Lang, Katie is shown as a scatterbrained and frazzled wreck; still attempting to get used to owning a hockey team. She sends Booth to talk to the team's head coach, retired NHL legend Jeremy Roenick.
As revealed later in the episode, Katie's innocent demeanor masked her true personality: that of a ruthless and villainous businesswoman. It was revealed that Katie cut staff salaries by 15%, which led to Lang having equipment manager Daryl Patterson sell his gear on eBay, and also traded several good players from the team. It was all done to make sure that the team finished in last place and attendance would plummet, and as a result, the evil Katie could move the team to a bigger market and make hundreds of millions of dollars.
Booth returned to Katie's office with James Aubrey, with the pair revealing Katie's duplicitous plans. After denying the claims at first, Katie owned up to her double dealings and defended them, stating that what she was doing wasn't illegal. She also claimed that her innocent act was to prevent her from being lambasted in her hometown if news of a relocation broke. Katie became a suspect in Lang's murder, but Katie denied murdering Lang. Lang's murder was revealed to be committed by a teammate of his, but Katie's fate regarding her plans was not revealed.
Trivia[]
- Katie Stober is similar to Rachel Phelps, the villainess from the first two Major League films. Both were villainous team owners who planned to tank their franchises so they could be relocated, and another similarity shared is that they both were married to the original owners and inherited the team after the husband's passing. However, Rachel was motivated by bitterness over her current surroundings and the team as a whole, while Katie's sole motivation was money.
- Brooke Lyons also appeared as the evil Erica on the short-lived sitcom One Big Happy.
