Karen Zariakas

The evil Karen Zariakas

Karen Zariakas (Anne Hathaway) is a villainess from the 2019 film, Serenity. She is the wife of Frank Zariakas and the ex-wife of Baker Dill (aka John Mason; the film's protagonist), as well as the mother of Patrick Zariakas; her son with Dill.

In a revealed plot twist, Karen is the villainess of a computer game concocted by Patrick out of his hatred for Frank, who is abusive to him and the real Karen. Karen meets Dill at Plymouth Island, where she was vacationing with Frank, and while on Dill's boat, Karen makes a lucrative deal: offering Dill $10 million to kill Frank. Dill originally turns down the offer, even after Karen mentions Frank's abuse, but the villainess was insistent and hopeful that Frank would be killed when he was on Dill's boat, only to be dismayed when he returned unharmed.

In a later meeting, Dill finally agrees to Karen's plan, but the scheme hits a snag when Duke, Dill's first mate, arranged to have Frank's hand broken. Frank originally backed out of joining Dill on his boat due to the injuries, but after the attack, the evil Karen manipulated her husband into heading to the boat and joining herself and Dill, who figured out that everything around him (including himself) was part of Patrick's game. The film's climax has Dill fully committed to the murderous plan, and it was on the boat that he and Karen were setting things in motion for a drugged up Frank. The appearance of Samson, Dill's new first mate, complicated things, with Karen considering killing Samson due to being an obstacle, only for Dill to talk her out of it.

During the fishing trip, a huge tuna fish (named "Justice" by Dill) grabs the line, after which Dill gives the fishing rod to Frank. Once Dill released the rod, Frank was sent overboard, where he was eaten by sharks. The game ended with Karen saying her goodbye to Dill, and in the real world, Patrick killed Frank and was institutionalized, while it was also revealed that the real Dill/John was killed years prior to the events while serving in Iraq.
