Joplin Bird (Emily Tosta) is the hidden main (redeemed) villainess from The Resident's second season opener, "00:42:30" (airdate September 24, 2018). She is a frequent patient of Dr. Nicollette "Nic" Nolan, as well as the younger sister of Rachei Bird, who was with her in the episode.
The siblings' backstory revealed that they lost their mother due to lupus, as Joplin appeared to be suffering the same symptoms. In the episode, a blackout struck Chastain Park, originally believed to be a simple power outage. However, further investigation revealed that it was a hacker who caused the blackout, and not only that, the hacker was in the hospital. In the episode's climax, Nic went to Joplin's room and noticed that her pills were gone, with Joplin claiming to have digested them. Nic noted that Joplin was allergic to certain chemicals in the medication, meaning that she couldn't have taken them, an admission Joplin made. After seeing her with her phone, Joplin was asked by Nic what she does on her phone, and it was at that moment that it was revealed that she was studying software engineering at MIT. Joplin stated that she had to drop out due to medical bills, leading to the reveal that Joplin was the hacker.
Joplin quickly confessed, blaming Chastain Park for ruining her dreams and her family's lives due to their medical bills. The villainess began hacking into the billing department during every one of her visits, including the one during the episode's events, and regarding her reasoning, Joplin stated to Rachel that she did it to get their lives back and to keep Rachel from working two jobs just to get by. Her plan was only to wipe out their bill, but the code she created ended up causing the blackout and preventing surgeries from being conducted. Nic reminded Joplin of this, causing Joplin to respond with shock at what she had inadvertently caused.
Without hesitation, Joplin offered to fix what she had done, and she gave Nic a backup of the hospital computer system. She expressed extreme remorse for her actions, stating that she deserved whatever punishment that was coming to her, while saying that Rachel had no idea about her hacking. The blackout ended, but Joplin's fate wasn't revealed.
