Medusa, in Greek Mythology, was a woman cursed with the hair of asps, golden wings and skin, and whose glare had the power to transform men into stone statues. She had two sisters, Stheno and Euryale, who are also Gorgons, but unlike Medusa, Stheno and Euryale were immortal. She and her sisters were once beautiful maidens full of promise and hope. Medusa was the goddess Athena's prized priestess, until Medusa was raped by the sea-god, Poseidon. Athena did not protect her from him.
Athena turned Medusa and her two sisters into the Gorgons, and banished them from the world of man despite their innocence in the whole ordeal. The three settled on an island on the edge of Ocean and hid there, protecting one another. Stheno and Eurayle killed anyone who came ashore the island in order to protect their sister who was only Functionally immortal, while Medusa stayed hidden in an abandoned Temple in the heart of the island, pleading with the Fates for death.
