Matty Walker (Kathleen Turner) is a vamp. She has an affect on men and she knows how to use it. Like a spider that catches flies in its web, Matty Walker attracts men to their doom.
Ned Racine (William Hurt) is a very lazy lawyer. Me meets Matty at a bar one night during a heat wave. The other men in the bar seem jealous of Ned as they have all tried their luck with the attractive woman that is Matty and one at a time they were all rejected. And yet for some reason Matty lets Ned stay in the hot spot.
Matty is sending Ned mixed messages. On one level she seemingly rejects his advances, telling him that she is married, but on the other level she lets him know that her husband is out of town.
Ned: Can I buy you a drink?
Matty: I told you. I've got a husband.
Ned: I'll buy him one too.
Matty: He's out of town.
Ned: My favorite kind. We'll drink to him.
Matty: Only comes up on weekends.
Ned: I'm liking him better all the time.
She lets Ned walk her home and then she goes in the house without kissing him good night. But once inside she begins to seduce Ned as he peers in the windows, she stairs back churning with desire. He breaks down the door and begins kissing her making lover to her on the floor.
Ned has been drawn into her web and now she plays with him making love to him almost constantly. She announces that her husband his coming back and Ned decides to kill his rival. He goes to one of his clients an arsonist named Teddy Lewis (a very young Mickey Rourke) and asks him to make him a firebomb. Teddy agrees but then reprimands Ned
Teddy Lewis: I got a serious question for you: What the fuck are you doing? This is not shit for you to be messin' with…
Ned doesn’t care, he is totally obsessed with Matty, who tells him that she can no longer stand her husband.
That night Matty is in bed with her husband Edmund Walker (Richard Crenna) that are making love and she tries to get him to go again. He complains that she is trying to kill him with sex. But then he hears a noise.
Edmund grabs a gun and goes down to investigate. It’s Ned and he has a club. From the top of the stairs Matty shouts, “He’s got a gun!”
Ned clubs Edmund and he goes down they then firebomb the place.
Matty is now rich. Ned helps her get complete control of the estate. There is a mistake in the will and Ned is blamed for it. It’s a mistake he made once years before. But he didn’t make it time.
Going over to Matty’s house he sees her standing looking in the other direction. Ned sneaks up on her.
Ned: Hey lady, ya wanna fuck?
The woman turns around and to his surprise it’s not Matty. (It’s Matty’s friend Mary Ann.)
Mary Ann: Gee, I don't know. Maybe. This sure is a friendly town.
Matty appears and introduces Mary Ann to Ned.
Matty : Ned, this is Mary Ann.
Mary Ann : We were just meeting. Ned made me feel very welcome.
Matty and Mary Ann are old high school friends.
Ned suddenly finds that he is being charged with the murder of Edmund. As Edmund’s glasses where not found in the fire. Ned realizes that he is being framed.
He also finds out that a woman has approached Teddy and order a firebomb.
Ned and Matty meet one last time and she tells him that she loves him and then walks off towards a gazebo which explodes.
The police find the badly burned body of a woman inside what is left of the gazebo.
Ned is blamed.
Ned ends up convicted and is sent to prison.
While in prison Ned orders a copy of Matty’s high school yearbook and finds that Matty’s name is also Mary Ann.
Matty’s friend Mary Ann’s name was Mary Ann Tyler who loved Home Economics and she was known as “Matty”.
The picture of the woman Ned knew as Matty has the name Mary And Simpson she was the Home Coming Queen and her nick name was “The Vamp” her ambition was – “To be rich and live in an exotic land.”
Cut to Matty sitting on a beach chair on an exotic beach in what appears to be Brazil. She is relaxing in the sun having full filled her every dream.
Ned is in jail, maybe for life. Matty’s former husband is dead as is the original “Matty” Mary Ann Tyler, whose burnt body was found in the exploded gazebo.
