Lorna Vanson-Altgeld is the villainous protagonist of "...Only Sin Deep", the second story contained within the 1954 comic book "The Haunt of Fear #24".
Lorna Vanson is a conceited woman who lures in men with her beauty, only to murder them for their valuables afterwards. One night after robbing such a man, she takes his pocket-watch to a pawn shop, only to find that it's only worth a single dollar. Nevertheless, her beauty quickly captures the shopkeeper's attention, prompting him to offer her $1,000 for it. Lorna thinks him mad, but agrees regardless and allows him to place a wax mold on her face. Once finished, the man gives her a pawn ticket in case she ever wishes to redeem her beauty.
With her newly acquired cash in hand, Lorna buys a new dress and gets a makeover. Ready to set her sights on higher class men, she visits the "Swank Club 711" one evening and meets a handsome man named Ronnie Altgeld III. At first Lorna plays hard to get and even slaps Ronnie for his forwardness, but this only increases the man's desire for her. Six months later, the two are married, but soon after, Lorna is horrified to notice that her natural beauty has begun to fade.
Desperate, Lorna returns to the pawn shop, only to be informed by the owner that her ticket had expired the day prior. Even so, he offers her another chance to reclaim her beauty, now at the price of $100,000. Believing that she may just get enough if she were to sell all of her own valuables, she races back to her home. However, Ronnie arrives back from his business trip and, not recognizing his wife, takes her for a burglar. Left with little options, Lorna decides to murder him and does so by bludgeoning her husband with a heavy brass statuette.
The following morning, Lorna see's that her name and photo have been placed in a newspaper article pointing to her as the killer. It is at this moment that the villainess realizes that if she were to buy back her looks, it would only land her in the electric chair.
