Hope Garrett (Mary Kay Place) is the villainess of "Vulnerable", episode 4.03 of Law & Order: SVU (airdate October 1, 2002). She was a manager of nursing home Jubilee Towers and was formerly a nurse at Oak Glade, with her backstory also revealing she worked in numerous other nursing homes in the fifteen years between those jobs. While she put on a persona of a caring professional, Hope was secretly giving her elderly patients potentially fatal medicine overdoses. Her motivation for doing so was that she enjoyed the praise and attention she received for saving her victims. However, it is revealed that Hope had been unable to save some of her poisoning victims, though this did nothing to stop Hope's evil actions.
After having her license revoked after killing an Oak Glade patient, Hope got a job at Jubilee Towers and continued poisoning patients there, with some of her victims not surviving. One of her former patients, Bess Sherman, was readmitted after the SVU squad believed that her caregiver son Joe was abusing her (though her true abuser later turned out be orderly Hal Shipley). Taking advantage of the opportunity, the evil Hope poisoned Bess and told Benson and Stabler that she'd seen Hal leaving the room right before Bess began coding.
Hope was able to save Bess, which was when Benson began to suspect something was amiss. After learning about the other patient Hope had saved or attempted to save, along with her being fired from Oak Glade, the detectives arrested the evil doctor as she was trying to convince a man to move into Jubilee Towers. During the trial, when M.E. Melinda Warner was giving testimony to the evidence against Hope, she went into a rant claiming how the doctors she worked for made several mistakes and how she had covered for them. She was eventually forcibly escorted out of court when she attempted to leave, ranting to the detectives and ADA Alexandra Cabot about how she had saved hundreds of lives.
