General Kala (Mariangela Melato) is a secondary antagonist in the 1980 fantasy movie Flash Gordon. Kala is played by the Italian actress Mariangela Melato.
Kala is the lieutenant of the Secret Police force of The Emporer Ming (Max Von Sydow). Although she was very beautiful, she was a ruthless, cold-hearted woman who possessed a merciless streak.
Kala participated in the torture of Princess Aura (Ornelia Muti), personally punishing Ming's daughter by flogging her with a cat o'nine tails after Aura was discovered to have aided Flash Gordon's escape from an execution ordered by Ming.
Kala later sought to suppress a revolt against Ming's rule led by Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones), King Vultan (Brian Blessed) and Prince Barin (Timothy Dalton). She tried to have Flash shot down as he was approaching Mingo City, but failed.
When Barin and Dr. Hans Zarkov (Topol) infiltrated the Secret Police command center, Kala attempted to shoot with her pistol. However, it was shot out of her hand. After Barin destroyed the Secret Police drones who monitored the grounds, Kala attempted an attack with a flamethrower. It was here that she was shot by Barin. She collapsed and disintegrated into a black liquid, leaving only her clothes.
