Deirdre Bodeen (Rose McKenna), also known as The Watcher, is the main villainess of the 2017 Australian horror film 3rd Night. She is a mysterious woman who sells a farmhouse to couples, and spends three nights stalking, harassing, and eventually killing them, while dressed in a cat mask.
Backstory[]
Very little is revealed about Deirdre's background. All that's shown is that as a child, she smashed her dolls with rocks while having a tea party in the orchard, and she once lived at the farm that she sells to people. However, some speculation can be made of what her backstory is, due to a photo and the three poems that she leaves for Megan and Jonathan.
Speculation[]
In the barn, Jonathan finds a photo of a couple, presumably the original owners of the farm. This is either Deirdre and a husband, or Deirdre's parents. Whether or not it's a husband or father, the poems left suggest that Deirdre was both sexually and physically abused. This is further supported by Deirdre destroying her dolls, a known symptom of child abuse. If she was abused, this could explain why she targets couples.
Events of the Film[]
At the beginning of the film, Deirdre chases a woman through the forest, who seems to have escaped captivity. However, she trips in front of the madwoman and Deirdre crushes her head with the sledgehammer and drags her body away. Some time after that, Deirdre sells the house to another couple, Jonathan and Megan Reid. She leaves a card, congratulating them, and is shown removing the "For Sale" sign from the property.
