Barrier was a field commander of an evil team attempting to take over the realm of Avalon. She appeared in the Hot Comic’s Gods for Hire (1986) #1-2. Art by Barry Crain.
Story[]
The dimensional realm of Avalon protected mankind’s dreams with the super-powered Knights of Avalon. Barrier was an arrogant super-powered field commander (force field & energy blasts) for the Shadowknights of Mu. She is ordered to kill the Knights of Avalon’s new recruits, so Prince, the leader of Mu, could finally corrupt the dreams of men.
Barrier brazenly attacks Avalon with a small strike team, partnered with a swamp like creature named Growth (they appeared to be in a relationship). She gleefully shoots a energy bolt into the back of her opponent Magicman. Since Barrier is protected by a force field, Magicman rips off her armored breastplate so she is thrown off-balance by inertia. He grabs and holds her by the neck, she calls him a Hispanic racial slur, and he responds by making her eat a handful Growth’s sludge. As Barrier roots for her teammates to kill she is casually knocked out by another Knight of Avalon. Most of the other Shadowknights of Mu are killed in battle. Barrier is last seen unconscious and sprawled out in muck of her dead partner Growth. She was cannon fodder and likely killed by the ruthless Mu leader Prince for her team’s failure.
Trivia[]
While Barrier is described as having a protective force field, she never actually exhibited this power in the comic (she was directly zapped, hit, and grabbed). Her costume armor was also drawn wildly inconsistently panel-to-panel. The comic story made little sense.
