Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates) is the main antagonist in the 1990 thriller Misery which is based on the popular novel by Stephen King.

Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates) is a former nurse and an obsessed fan of famed novelist Paul Sheldon. She has a collection of all his "Misery" novels starring her favorite character, Misery Chastain. She even has a pig named after her. Annie follows Paul from the hotel where he is staying at on the day of a terrible blizzard and rescues him from a car accident and takes him back to her place.  Annie appears to Paul as a kind woman.  She even tends his injured leg and claims to have called people. However, she later reveals her true colors after learning that Paul has killed off Misery Chastain in his latest novel, "Misery's Child". Annie forces Paul to destroy his latest manuscript which contains profanity and later forces Paul to bring back the character of Misery Chastain.  Paul tricks Annie into leaving to get the right of kind of typing paper. After Annie leaves to go to the store to get some typing paper for Paul. He uses his self made lock pick to try to escape as he heads toward the door.  Paul tries the door only to find out that it's locked.  He tries using Annie’s phone only to find out that only the cover remains as the rest of the phone was already taken out.  He goes to the stock room and gets himself some Novril, a painkiller.  He goes into the kitchen only to find out that the door leading to the outside is also locked.  While still being in the kitchen, Paul sees a set of various knives and  hears Annie coming and heads back to his room before she’s able to catch him right in the act. Later, while Annie has dinner with Paul, Paul tries to spike Annie’s wine with Novril, hoping to kill her but it backfires when she knocks over a candle and spills it all over the table.  She ends up pouring a new and unharmed glass.  One rainy night, a very depressed Annie gives Paul his pills and ends up telling him that when he first came there, she only loved the writing side of Paul Sheldon but now she knows she loves the rest of him too.  After pointing out that the rain sometimes “gives her the blues,” Annie shows Paul a gun and says that sometimes she thinks about using it.  Annie soon leaves Paul and the house by stating that she might put bullets in the gun.  While gone, Paul breaks out of his room again and goes to the kitchen in order to steal one of her knives.  While heading back to his room, he notices that she left her scrapbook out, showing that she has killed many patients under her care, including infants, with him possibly being next.  Annie eventually returns and Paul ends up hiding the stolen knife between the mattresses of his bed.  However, Annie notices that her ceramic penguin, which he knocked off and managed to catch earlier, is facing the opposite of the direction it usually faces and realizes that Paul has been out of his room and soon catches on to his ruse.  She drugs Paul and binds both his legs to the bed and breaks both of his ankles with a sledge hammer.  Meanwhile, a sheriff named Buster is looking for Paul. He pays a call to Annie.  Annie panics and hides Paul in her basement.  However, when Buster begins to leave, he hears a very suspicious sound.  Buster goes back to see if Annie is alright and while checking to see whether she is or not, Paul calls out to him from the basement and Buster finds him only to be shot and killed by Annie.  Paul realizes that it is only a matter of time before Annie kills him and commits suicide to be with him for eternity. Paul manages to stall for time by pointing out that they must finish the book so they will “be able to give Misery back to the world.”  While finishing up the book, Paul asks her for three things: a cigarette, a match, and a glass of Dom Perignon, which she gives him.  Paul tricks Annie once again into getting her to leave to get another glass of Dom Perignon for herself while he prepares to burn the latest manuscript of the supposedly new Misery Chastain novel, "Misery's Return." When Annie returns, he burns the manuscript right in front of her.  She desperately tries to rescue the burning pages and while she’s doing that, Paul slams the typewriter on her head. She gets up and they have an extremely violent fight with Paul tripping her and causing her head to hit the typewriter again, knocking her out momentarily.  Paul tries dragging himself out of the room with Annie coming to and landing on him at the last minute.  Paul reaches for a doorstop, that’s in the shape of her pet pig, and manages to use it by hitting her in the face with it, finally killing her.

Quotes[]

  • I'm your number one Fan. - Annie to Paul.
  • I thought you were good ,Paul, but you're not good. You’re just another lying old dirty birdie and I don't think I'd better be around you for a while.  And don't even think about anybody coming for you.  Not the doctors, not your agent, not your family, because I never called them.  Nobody knows you're here.  And you better hope nothing happens to me, because if I die, you die. -Annie as she reveals her true colors to Paul
