Anika Hauten (MyAnna Buring) was a minor hidden villainess from "The Animals", episode 1.07 of Crossing Lines (airdate July 28, 2013). She was a secretary at the International Bank den Haag who encountered ICC investigator Carl Hickman when he came into the bank and asked to meet with the manager, informing him that he needed an appointment and the two seemingly striking an attraction between themselves.
Soon after, Carl and Anika were taken hostage (along with everyone else in the bank) by a gang of armed thugs, and it was during the hostage situation that Anika revealed out of fear to the crazed and sadistic leader of the gang that Carl was a cop (the gang having learned that one of their hostages was police). Afterwards, Anika apologized to Carl for outing him and Carl forgave her. However, Anika was later gagged and had a bomb strapped to her by the leader; but was quickly rescued by Louis, who deactivated the bomb.
In a surprise twist, Anika was revealed as a villainess in the two-part season finale, "New Scars, Old Wounds: Part 1" and "New Scars, Old Wounds: Part 2", during which Anika was found dead and Carl was arrested under suspicion of killing her. As revealed in the episode, Anika turned heel during the aforementioned hostage situation by stealing €100,000 from the bank, thinking the gang that invaded the bank would be blamed. Phillip Genovese, the career criminal who was responsible for Carl's disabled right hand, confronted Anika when she illegally shut down his bank account by orders of an unknown party, torturing her until she confessed. As well as admitting to robbing Genovese, the evil Anika sold Carl out and offered to give him the money. But this did nothing to assuage Genovese, who proceeded to kill her for stealing from him.
